Practical Information

Manitoba’s central location, varied geography and resources, and cultural and ethnic diversity are some of the reasons why it is an ideal location in which to live. With the advantages of a big city culture, Manitoba also has the characteristics and quality of life associated with small town living, including a strong sense of community and warm hospitality.

Health Care

Hospital care and physician care are financially supported by provincial and national health programs, and are provided to Manitobans at no charge. Newcomers to Canada who have moved to Manitoba for employment are eligible for this care at no charge if their work permits are valid for at least 12 months. Health care coverage begins on the date you arrive in Manitoba, and all family members listed on your work permit are also eligible. Newcomers to Manitoba must visit the offices of Manitoba Health in person to register for coverage. You can find more information about health care coverage in Manitoba on the Manitoba Health website at www.gov.mb.ca/health.

Cost of Living

One of the main advantages of living in Manitoba is its affordability. The cost of living is equal to or below the national average, and housing prices are among the lowest in Canada. With lower personal living costs, Manitobans enjoy a high standard of living.

Cultural and Ethnic Diversity

As one of the most ethnically diverse provinces in Canada, Manitoba is a unique and vibrant blend of many heritages and an ideal destination for new immigrants. More than 270,000 Manitobans have a language other than English as their mother tongue. The multicultural fabric of this province is continually enriched as newcomers bring their cultures, customs, and traditions. Strong communities are built and mutual respect is created through celebrations of the various cultures living and working together in Manitoba.
